Appcelerator and Engine Yard Partner to Deliver Integrated Cloud Connected Mobility Solution

BARCELONA, Spain --(Business Wire)--

GSMA (News - Alert) MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS - Appcelerator®, the leading platform for rapidly developing native mobile, desktop and tablet applications using web technologies, and Engine Yard, the leading Ruby on Rails development and deployment platform for the cloud, today announced an agreement to provide an end-to-end solution for the rapid development and deployment of highly scalable mobile applications. The partnership provides developers with the integrated platform needed to take advantage of the explosive growth in cloud-connected mobility.

Appcelerator Titanium's cross-platform technology allows developers to build a mobile application once and have it run on many different client devices such as iPhone and Android (News - Alert) phones. Engine Yard provides a cloud platform to quickly develop and deploy backend Rails applications with high scalability, reliability and performance. The combination of Appcelerator and Engine Yard creates a simple, powerful way for developers to get Web-scale, mobile-enabled applications up and running quickly.

"Many Engine Yard customers are looking to extend their applications to mobile clients," said Mike Piech, VP of product management and marketing at Engine Yard. "Appcelerator Titanium allows developers to leverage their existing application backend, practically unchanged, while enabling access from a wide range of new devices. Appcelerator customers can take advantage of the speed and agility of buildin and running application backends in Rails on Engine Yard, which offers scalability and flexibility as their businesses grow."

One category of applications that will benefit from the Appcelerator and Engine Yard partnership is mobile commerce. Services such as "daily deal" coupons are often consumed on a mobile device, and enabling a user to complete a coupon-initiated transaction requires richness of functionality on the device as well as a secure, reliable, and high performance backend on the Web. Appcelerator Titanium allows the commerce site developer to write the rich client once and have it run on devices ranging from phones to desktops, while a backend developed in Rails and running on Engine Yard supports the transactional capabilities, responsiveness, and adaptability needed for a Web-scale application.

"We see mobile commerce as one of many opportunities where Appcelerator and Engine Yard can help customers expand their relationship with clientele before, during, and after purchase," said Jeff Haynie, CEO, Appcelerator. "With seamless development and deployment, customers can begin leveraging client-side functionality, rich merchandising experiences, loyalty programs, the mobile wallet, and more - with data stored in the cloud and secure, yet readily available to any number of mobile clients."

As part of the agreement, Appcelerator and Engine Yard will integrate and certify each other's technologies, jointly develop best practices, and create common architectural patterns to help developers build mobile applications using Appcelerator Titanium with Ruby on Rails backends developed and deployed on the Engine Yard platform. The companies' joint solution will be available later this year.
