Pune to host Teletech 2013 conference [Pune] [Times of India]

(Times of India Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) PUNE: The application of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technologies in achieving futuristic goals in the fields of medical diagnosis and treatment, clean water, improved sanitation, energy, exports and food security, will be discussed at the fourth annual 'Teltech 2013' conference here on February 15.


The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the MIT School of Telecom Management (MITSOT) have jointly organised the conference, which aims at highlighting the issues and challenges in the telecom sector.

Machine-to-Machine (M2M) refers to technologies that allow both wireless and wired systems to communicate with other devices of the same ability. Devices can be connected to other devices to share content such as alerts, status, and supply chain information, making for a seamless and automated flow of data and services.

The technology has been around for more than two decades, initially used to run on landline connections and was used for controlling industrial processes remotely. With advances in mobile broadband speeds and smart phone computing, the same robotic conversations are now rapidly shifting to wireless networks.

Currently, about a third of all M2M communication involves so-called smart utility meters, which perform duties like sending data on household electric and gas consumption to utilities which in turn use the information to tailor production to actual demand.

As per GSMA, the proliferation of connected devices will create near Rs 245 lakh crore ($4.5 trillion) market for global business by 2020. The M2M technology is not just the territory of developed countries. In fact, these next-generation communication technologies may well originate in the larger growth markets of the developing world, particularly - China and India.

Ubiquitous connectivity and low cost chips are driving M2M adoption. These technologies have much to offer for the developing world in their goals for improving quality of life.

However, for the concept M2M to gain acceptance among the general populace, service providers and other stakeholders and others must deliver applications that bring tangible value to people's lives. The conference will feature these and many other issues, to be deliberated by the representatives of some of the leading telecom majors.
