G.hn Recognized as Smart Grid Standard

BEAVERTON, OR, Mar 05, 2013 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- News Highlights: -- The Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP), which was established as a Smart Grid industry public-private partnership by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in 2009 to support its EISA act responsibilities, has adopted high speed home networking standard G.hn into its Catalog of Standards -- The SGIP has also adopted G.cx, which specifies G.hn coexistence with other PLC standards -- HomeGrid Forum welcomes this major recognition for both G.hn and G.cx The HomeGrid Forum announced today that the G.hn home networking standard has been adopted into the prestigious Catalog of Standards created by the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP). The move represents another important step forward in the acceptance of the high speed home networking standard and comes just as many companies are beginning to introduce G.hn products into their portfolios, including utilities and Service Providers.

Since inclusion in the Catalog is achieved after a membership vote which includes our industry peers and partners, as well as our competitors, it is a measure of the recognition that this high speed networking standard is achieving within the industry and of its enormous potential in the smart grid arena." G.hn, or Gigabit home networking, enables very high speed in-home networking using existing household wires (powerline, phone line and coax), enabling the delivery of high quality networked entertainment including triple play and IPTV as well as supporting Smart Grid applications.

The US NIST is responsible under the U.S. Energy Independence and Security Act for the co-ordination of standards development for the Smart Grid. The SGIP was established by NIST in 2009 as a public-private partnership that defines requirements for essential communication protocols and other common specifications and coordinates development of these standards by the collaborating organizations. The SGIP, now known as SGIP 2.0, produces a Catalog of Standards (http://www.nist.gov/smartgrid/catalog_of_standards.cfm) as a compendium of the approved standards, practices, and guidelines relevant to the development and deployment of a robust, secure and interoperable Smart Grid. Both G.hn and G.cx were evaluated by SGIP committees and groups and reviewed against the necessary high-level security requirements and other Smart Grid functionalities as part of the SGIP process for inclusion to the Catalog, and were voted into the Catalog by the SGIP plenary membership.
