Bita Milanian Looks Ahead to Growing Communications Technologies, Encourages Women in Telecom

June 03, 2014

The world is always changing, and that is especially true in the world of enterprise and real time communications. The new – the Web – is merging with the old – traditional telecom – and opening up brand new doors to new collaboration, productivity and communication tools and applications.

I caught up with Bita Milanian, SVP of marketing communications at GENBAND, to discuss her experience in telecom, the role of women in the industry and what we can expect to see from GENBAND moving forward. It’s not very often I get to interview women when discussing telecom, IT and communications networks, but regardless of gender, Milanian’s passion for the industry, GENBAND and improving enterprise communications shined through.

“I see communications and communications technologies as fundamental to the expansion of progress, creation of value in any business, and overall improvement of the world,” she explained. Areas like WebRTC, embedded voice and video in applications, mobile and the shifting enterprise landscape are all areas that excite her and are moving real time communications forward.

Companies are looking to adapt to mobility while also move toward more flexible, software-based, cost-efficient productivity applications through real time communications. GENBAND helps them do that through solutions like Generation Enterprise.

These solutions are part of the technology, innovation and business growth GENBAND offers that made it an attractive move for Milanian. It’s also about the people – GENBAND is participating in initiatives like its Global Day of Service and getting involved with one particular organization close to Milanian’s heart.

GENBAND is now sponsoring Women in the Channel, a grassroots organization made up of women who are in leadership, ownership and revenue-generation roles in the alternate sales channel sector of the telecommunications industry.

Milanian offers some advice to women to play a more active role in telecom, technology and software: “Be confident and brave and happy that the industry is changing toward software and creative applications – women are great communicators and I believe will be the great developers of future solutions,” she said. “Be unaware there is a gender gap – while we know challenges still exist – I never, ever let them keep me from my mission to contribute deeply to every organization I’ve been fortunate to be a part of.”

She also leaves a note of advice for both men and women. “Love what you do, become passionate about it no matter what that takes, study, listen, learn, and then arrive at your own way to think about things, imagine them, and share them – the future in this industry is out there to be built – it is an incredible time – for talented women – and men!”
