In an age where providing the ultimate customer experience is of paramount importance, companies cannot just implement the latest technologies, but must go through a comprehensive transformation of their IT infrastructure. So says Logicalis, an ardent promoter of the benefits of converged infrastructure (CI). Businesses that fail to implement CI will likely be unable to meet the demands of customers in a digital economy.
Research data supports the idea that CI is the direction many IT departments are headed towards. A recent MarketsandMarkets report predicts that the already sizable CI market, which was $11.53 billion in 2014, will grow almost threefold to $33.89 billion in 2019, a CAGR of 24.1 percent. The growth of the cloud, reduced capital and operating expenses, traditional data centers becoming obsolete, and making IT more consistent with business goals are significant factors causing the growth.
Cloud technology, mobile device support, social media, and data analytics are far from being new concepts in the technology press. A seemingly countless number of businesses are using at least one of those technologies, but in Logicalis’ eyes, that’s not good enough.
There is a danger that these technologies, which have proven invaluable to most businesses that use them, can become these unmanageable siloes that don’t play well together; a converged infrastructure integrates them so that they do. This has an effect that not only eliminates redundant effort, but makes the usual effort more productive. There’s no need to ‘glue’ all the environments together, because they were never isolated to begin with.
If there is any bad news, it’s that the total transformation from an inefficient hodgepodge of IT environments to what Logicalis calls a ‘digital-enabled enterprise’ has no quick fixes. Logicalis specifies six steps that companies need to follow with each step dependent upon the previous one. Some companies may have already completed some of these steps before they go with a Logicalis CI solution, but even then, completing the transformation process is usually not easy.
Companies must switch to component-based architecture to ensure that IT resources are optimally utilized. They must transform from the physical IT environment to virtualization. The next step is CI, to ensure that environments are properly integrated.
Protection implementation prepares IT for security breaches and disasters. Automation and orchestration ensure that IT has the right capacity to do the work and that change management runs smoothly. Once these steps are achieved, the Logicalis CI customer can finally implement cloud computing.
In the Logicalis world, companies that use many of the modern technologies like the cloud or data analytics are on the right track, but fall short of having an IT environment that can be all that it can be. Companies that do not undergo the complete transformation of IT infrastructure similar to their recommendations won’t be agile enough to meet fast-paced customer demands, and unable to compete effectively in their industry.
